from the 1976 Hendricks County history (page 254):
Charles Eugene Davis (b. July 28, 1857; d. May 26, 1926) was the son of Walter and Mary Margaret (Spears) Davis. He was born in Eel River Township, about three miles east of North Salem, on a Hendricks County farm which his grandfather, Nathan Davis (b. 1795), had bought in 1835 after moving from Kentucky to Indiana.
Charles's father, Walter Davis (b. December 12, 1823; d. January 11, 1893) was 12 years old at the time the move was made to Indiana and he continued to live on this farm until his death.
Charles Eugene Davis inherited from his parents a liking for books and an appreciation of the advantages of a formal education. He attended college at Terre Haute Normal School (now Indiana State University) and taught later.
Charles Davis married Harriet Cade McBroom in 1884. To them were born five daughters: Harriet, Vangie, Jeanette, Dessie and Adelle. Their mother died when Adelle was only 18 months old and Charles Davis reared his five daughters alone passing on to them his love of books and a desire for learning. The Davis children remembered their father's large library, the only one they had access to until they went to college.
Charles Davis successfuly farmed land to the east of his father's place, a farm which was in the Davis family for more than 100 years.
