Johann Michael Vogl
Birth: Aug. 10, 1768
Death: Nov. 19, 1840

Opera Singer. A lead baritone at the Vienna Opera, he sang the role of Pizarro in the revised, successful version of Beethoven's opera "Fidelio" (1814). In 1817 Vogl met Franz Schubert and became his first great champion; over the next decade he introduced hundreds of that composer's songs in fashionable salons throughout Austria. He also used his influence to secure a staging of Schubert's opera "The Twin Brothers" (1820) and sang both title roles. Having resigned from the Opera in 1822, Vogl gave up performing entirely after Schubert's death in 1828. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
