Big Stone Gap - Capt. Rodney H. Stone was killed May 2, 1970 during combat in which he directed several air strikes against the enemy near Kalum Special Forces Camp in South Vietnam.

Captain Stone was a graduate of Powell Valley High School, and upon graduation from VMI, he was commissioned in the Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Stone, his son Todd, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Stone, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Hiram (Nell) Draper of Big Stone Gap.

Burial is in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Virginia

U. S. Air force Captain Rodney H. Stone, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Stone, Big Stone Gap, Virginia received the Air Medal for air action in Southeast Asia.

Captain Stone was cited for his outstanding airmanship and Courage as a pilot on Successful and import missions under hazardous conditions.

Posthumous Award as widow gets medals

Captain Rodney Stone was awarded the Distinguished Flying cross posthumously for combat action in Vietnam in which he was killed May 2, 1970.

Captain Stone directed several air strikes against the enemy in which he was forced to fly under a 2,000 foot overcast while routing the enemy fire. The citation credits Captain Stone with saving many lives in the effort in which he died.

In addition to the Distinguished Flying Cross, the family received ten Oak Leaf Clusters for the air medal he had earned on missions prior to his death.

The presentation was made by Donald L. Barse, personal affairs officer at Clinton County Air Force Base, Ohio to the widow and his parents.

Before being stationed in South Vietnam, Captain Stone served in Thailand and Guam
