Eugene was the son of George Fairbanks and Hannah Nealy. He served in Company H, 13th Regiment, Mass Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted 29 June 1861, was wounded Aug. 30, 1862, at the 2d battle of Bull Run, VA, and was discharged for disability 11 Feb 1863. He married Mary H Baxter on 5 Jan 1866 in Stow, Middlesex County, MA.
