OBITUARY: Obituary for Helen Lorraine Spencer All Safe and Blessed, We Shall Meet At Last

Lorraine Spencer, 90, of Rockford went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 30, 2012 at 10:15 a.m. in Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center. She was born on February 4, 1922 in Fassetts, PA, daughter of Raymond and Bonnie (Cowan) Seymour. United in Marriage on November 28, 1942 to Bruce G. Spencer, Sr. Lorraine was a devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She took time to listen and encourage people and was truly her husband's partner in life and in ministry. Lorraine always put God first, lived in his Word and prayed daily for her family. She knew, even before her family did, which needs needed to be lifted to the Lord. She is survived by her children, Bruce (Maryland) Spencer, of Chippewa Falls, WI, Joy (George) Thornton of Dacula, GA, Douglas (Marita) Spencer of Ft. Dodge, IA, Dan (Patti) Spencer of Simpsonville, SC, Beth (Chris) Whitehead of Winnebago; 16 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Kenneth Seymour, Raymond Seymour, Lucille Grimes, and Bruce Seymour. A funeral service will be on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Funeral & Cremation Services, 1340 South Alpine Rd. Rockford, with visitation from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Pastor Richard Nelson will officiate. Interment in Belvidere Cemetery.

August 30, 2012 my mom, Lorraine Spencer, went to be with Jesus.
She had been a widow for 10 years after being married to my Dad for 60 years. There are 5 of us kids, 19 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
I am so thankful for memories and want to share a few with you today...
Mom had such a gift of hospitality -
Being a pastors wife there were always people being invited into our home for tea, dinner, or even to join us after the evening service on Sunday night for some of Mom's great cooking.
Mom loved her kitchen; she was so domestic there was something always freshly baked right out of the oven. Our family will especially miss the gingersnaps, breads, coffee cakes and caramel corn, not to mention the fabulous lefse (Norwegian flat bread) she always made at Christmas time.
Mom was so caring -
She had a big job over the years to take care of us kids and our needs while Dad was so involved in ministry. Then in the last years of my Dad's life when he had Alzheimer's she lovingly took care of him to the end. Mom suffered a brain stem stroke shortly thereafter which caused big changes in her life.
Mom was such a good listener, encourager and prayer warrior -
Mom spent time daily reading God's Word, praying and then sharing the Love of Jesus with others after coming to know Him personally when she was 19.
For years Mom taught "good news club" thru Child Evangelism Fellowship, Sunday school classes, vacation bible school for children and occasionally she would speak at ladies meetings. God always used her to influence others. It was Mom's goal to read the Bible through in a year, which she did year after year. Always praying before we kids were even out of bed in the morning and then again at night, kneeling beside the bed with Dad praying for the needs of others. What a wonderful Godly Heritage we have. Mom always shared scripture and I think of a verse Philippians 4:8 that she referred to many times "Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praise worthy, think about such things.
What a privilege for her to live at Fairhaven-
The friendships she made here attending chapel services, bible studies, and prayer groups that were so encouraging in this last season of her life, just to name a few of the many activities that were available to her. She became a big fan of playing Bingo and always loved to win.
Last, but not least, the love and compassion from the staff on the 2nd floor Health Center who went above and beyond what we could have asked and for Arnie graciously coming at the end to visit, read scripture, sing and pray.
Fairhaven is a very special place!
We five Spencer kids are eternally grateful Mom could call this place home till God took her home for all eternity.
