Birth: Jan. 9, 1860, Netherlands
Death: May 15, 1936
Long Beach
Los Angeles County
California, USA

Name originally Van Houtum. Children and descendants are Van Houten.

Per death certificate:
"John G. van Houtum" b. Jan. 9, 1855, d. May 15, 1936. ("Van Howtum" in 1880 & Van Houtum in 1900 censuses.)

Per grave marker:
"John G. vanHouten" b. 1851, d. 1936. (Van Houten in 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses.)

Year of birth: 1851 per grave marker; 1855 per death certificate; Jan. 1860 per 1900 census; age 50 per 1910 census; age 60 per 1920 census; age 74 per 1930 census. 1860 seems most consistent.

Place of birth: Holland/Netherlands per all census records (1880/1900/1910/1920/1930). Born Amsterdam, Holland, son of Godfrey Van Houtum & Nellie Frisch per his death certificate (son Robert informant).

Per 1920 census, he immigrated to the US in 1875 and was naturalized in 1880.

California Indian Wars Veteran 1875-1880 (under the name John Godrey [sic] Van Houtum) (indexed as Vanhoutum). He was not a Civil War veteran.

John G. Van Houtum marriages (see wives for more details):
1) Martha Ella Smith, Jan. 20, 1881, Yavapai Co., AZ. She generally used her middle name Ella. Three children.
2) Mary H. Smale, Dec. 12, 1895, Yavapai Co., AZ. No children.

He is buried next to his grandson Robert E. Van Houten.

[This memorial was originally created by Shiver and included the following erroneous note:
"Civil War Union Veteran. Company B 12th US Infantry. Born Pennsylvania. Member GAR. Source: Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Dept. of California and Pacific."
However, he was clearly not born in Pennsylvania. The Indian Wars pensions are included in the Civil War Pension Index, which is probably the source for the Civil War confusion.]
