Son of William S. and Mary Elizabeth (Rontzong) Tranum. His father died during the Civil War in Rock Island, Illinois. Louis married Jessie A. Boyle on September 22, 1891 in Chicago, Illinois. He worked as a bookbinder most of his adult life. His wife died twenty-nine days before him. They did not have any children.
