Socrates was the son of Thomson Beach and Betsey Wales. When he turned 18, he moved to Burlington, Chittenden, Vermont. In 1843, he went to work at a bakery owned by General Joseph Hatch.
On January 13, 1850, Socrates married General Hatch's daughter, Abigail Eaton Hatch. Their children include

- Mrs. Cornelius H Powers
- Mrs. Mark W Adams.
When General Hatch retired, Socrates took over the bakery business. He moved from Main and South Battery Street to College Street, and continued to build a successful business at the new location. A few years before his death, he sold the company to the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco).
