Aviator. One of the most famous aviators of the early 20th Century, he was chief pilot for Pan American Airways. He was a flight instructor during World War I and began work for Pan American in 1928. He was pilot of the first "China Clipper" beginning on November 22, 1935, flying the new Martin M-130 flying boat on the island hopping route from Alameda, CA to Manila in 7 days. Awarded the Harmon Trophy in 1935 as the "world's most outstanding aviator" for his "pioneering work in aviation." Capt Musick was one of the first pilots to log more than 10,000 hours of flight time, and in his career, flew over 1 million miles. He and his crew were lost at sea in the explosion of the Samoan Clipper, shortly after take-off from Pago Pago, on January 11, 1938, while on a route-surveying flight. The aircraft was never located.
