Biographical Information by Dennis Nicklaus:
Ralph or (``Butch'') was the owner of the Nicklaus Meat Market in Parkersburg. Ralph's cousin Fred remembers it as a good meat market. After Ralph's brother Ernie finished school, he went to work for his brother Ralph in the meat market.
After Ralph died, Ernie helped Ralph's wife Laura run the meat market for a few years, but then she got remarried and decided to move to Minnesota, so the meat market was sold, but Ernie continued working there for the new owners.
Ralph died when driving a car and a jar of lard from the back of the car slid forward and struck him in the head. His brother Ernie relates the following account of Ralph's death:
"Ralph was killed in a car accident, coming back from Waterloo. He was on old highway 20 (which is now highway 57), just outside of Benson. He had just crossed out of Black Hawk county and into Grundy county, when another car hit him. He had some things from the meat market in the back, and when the other car hit him, they came forward and landed on him and he was killed."
The newspaper account of the accident is similar. It says the accident occured about 12:30 a.m. The other car failed to make a turn and tipped over, and Ralph, who was coming back from the Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo, ran into their car which caused his car to overturn. Stores in Parkersburg closed for an hour in Ralph's honor during his funeral.
There are twin infant boys Nicklaus buried in the same plot without stones or dates.
