Bessie was the third of ten children born to Peter and Della (Abbott) Gay. She grew up around the Moose Lake area and attended school there. She married Rudolph Petschl and together they had three children: Dorothy (Rediess), Eugene and an unnamed baby boy. Later on, Bessie and Rudolph owned and operated a dry cleaning business in Minneapolis.

Bessie is buried by her mother-in-law Anna and her husband Rudolph.
