Born as Betty Ellen Weber, she graduated Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and studied under actress Maude Adams. She acted with Clare Tree Major Children's Theatre touring company, doing much work in New York City. She was married to Hal Thompson, a retired television producer. Although her work on The Guiding Light made up the largest part of her career, she had extensive stage work before and during her stint on television. Her husband, Hal Thompson, directed her in an off Broadway production of Family Portrait. She often did theatre with Charita Bauer (Bert), Theo (Papa), and Ed Bryce (Bill) - in shows directed by Hal Thompson. Her professional name was Demming, but she went by Ellen Thompson, elsewhere.
