Mr. George Earl Mabe, 80, Lexington, passed away after an extended illness Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.Mr. Mabe was born in Lexington and was proud to have lived on the family farm all his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Albert and Lorine Daugherty Mabe of Lexington.He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the Normandy invasion. Mr. Mabe was a member of Local No. 320, Operating Engineers and a member of Lexington United Methodist Church. He was employed more than 30 years with Sanderson Contracting Co.The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Lexington United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dallas Culver officiating. The casket will lie in state from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Portertown Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday evening at the funeral home. Elkins East Chapel is assisting the family.Mr. Mabe is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mrs. Celestine McGuire Mabe; daughters, Mary Ann Brown and husband, Patrick, of Lexington, Linda Mabe Bailey and husband, Don, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren, Amy Lovelace and husband, Scott, of Killen, Lori Ambrose and husband, Richie, of Birmingham, Julie Cameron and husband, Chris, of Knoxville, Tenn., Donald Bailey of Chattanooga; great-grandchildren, Lori-Anna and Mary Lindsay Lovelace and Abby and Mitchell Ambrose; brother, Edward Mabe of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.Pallbearers will be Gerald Campbell, Larry Ritter, Neil McGuire, Bobby Howard, Billy Robertson, Steve Robertson, Patrick Campbell and Bobby McGuire.Honorary pallbearers will be A.D. Howard, Royce Truitt, Glenn Cox, Jack Cole, Orville Bailey, Morris Williams, Danny Knight, Danny Mitchell, Elton Campbell and Doyce Truitt.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lexington United Methodist Church or to other causes that would help the needy.The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to Dr. Lester Porter and the staff of St. Thomas Hospital for all of their loving care..
