Elected to represent Maryland in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1938 until his death in 1941. He also served in the Maryland State senate from 1930 to 1934 and as mayor of Williamsport from 192 to -1930 as had his grandfather for whom he was named. Born in Danville, Virginia he moved to Williamsport, Maryland with his parents in 1899 where he continued his education in the public schools followed by Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and then the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He was commissioned a first lieutenant during World War I after enlisting as a private in the Aviation Corps. He was an instructor in flying and in aerial gunnery. After the war he entered the leather manufacturing business followed by his political career. He married Katharine Edgar, a granddaughter of U.S. Senator Louis Emory McComas and who was to complete her late husbands term in Congress following a special election held after his death in an airplane crash in Georgia. They were the parents of Goodloe Edgar Byron who would also follow his father in politics both in the Maryland senate and in Congress. Goodloe too would be succeeded in Congress by his wife Beverly Barton (Butcher) Byron.
