A cenotaph for Jesse J. Crapo exists here with a lengthy biography: Jesse J. Crapo

Jesse J. Grapo enlisted in Company E, Michigan 3rd Infantry Regiment on 11 Mar 1862. During the month of June 1862—only 3 months after he enlisted—Jesse became sick with Typhoid Fever; he was sent to the field hospital at Bottom's Bridge, Virginia. Bottom's Bridge was a bridge that spanned the Chickahominy River in Virginia.* According to Third Michigan Infantry researcher and writer Steve Soper, Jesse "died of typhoid fever at either Fair Oaks or Savage Station, Virginia on June 17, 1862" and is presumably buried at one of those locations. "The Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War, 1861-1865," published by the Michigan Legislature in 1905 only mentions that he "died of disease at Fair Oaks, Virginia, June 17, 1862."**

A story exists that says Governor Henry Crapo of Michigan, Jesse's uncle, requested Jesse's body be brought back to Michigan for burial; however, the body was lost and the return to Michigan never occurred. Henry Howland Crapo was not governor yet when Jesse died on June 17, 1862. He was governor from 1864-1868. So any effort by Henry Crapo to find Jesse's body if true would have been more likely during his term as a state senator (1862-1864). The author of this bio does not know if the story is grounded in myth or fact. The former manager adds a twist to the story: "His body was to be taken back to Michigan for burial but there was a mix-up in the burial records and he was buried in this National Cemetery in Virginia," i.e. Seven Pines National Cemetery. The present manager has never seen any documentation saying where Jesse was buried. The closest documentation thus far uncovered is that Jesse died in a field hospital either at Bottom's Bridge, Savage's Station, or Fair Oaks, and would have been buried where he died. If he was disinterred and reburied 4 years later at the creation of Seven Pines National Cemetery, he would most likely be one of the many unknown soldiers buried in Seven Pines. Seven Pines is only one of several places which could have served as Jesse's final resting place. Anything more is pure speculation.
