ACCIDENTAL DROWNING

A Girl Falls Into the Canal Near St. Johnsville

At about eleven o'clock Sunday morning when about a mile west of St. Johnsville, a young woman named Alice Fralick, aged twenty years, accidentally fell off the canal boat, "Alex McCald," owned by her father, Andrew Fralick, and before assistance could be rendered the girl was drowned.

It in not known how she came to fall overboard, as no one happened to be near her at the time. The boat was loaded with lumber which was piled up higher than the gunwale, upon which she was sitting in a chair, cleaning potatoes for dinner. Both her mother and father were down in the cabin of the boat at the time of the accident, and upon hearing a noise her father, who has rheumatism, rushed on deck as quickly as possible and was horrified to see his daughter struggling in the water. He was unable to swim but he threw a board overboard for his daughter to take hold of, at the same times calling for the steersman in the forward canal boat. The latter jumped upon the canal bank and ran up opposite to where the young woman was in the water, but she had sank to the bottom before he could reach her. After a brief search the body was recovered and the proper authorities notified. It was decided there was no need for an inquest. The remains were placed in a casket at St. Johnsville and this morning the father and mother of the deceased placed the remains on the 7:17 express and returned to their home in Phoenix, Oswego County, where their daughter, who only a few days previous left in the full enjoyment of health, will be buried.
