Served as permanent chairman of the first Republican State convention held July 6, 1854, at Jackson, Michigan. U.S. Representative from Michigan 3rd District Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Congresses, 1855-1859. Appointed postmaster of Kalamazoo by President Johnson in 1860.
