Fort Banks was a U.S. Coast Artillery fort located in Winthrop, Massachusetts. It served to defend Boston Harbor from enemy attack from the sea and was built in the 1890s during what is known as the Endicott period, a time in which the coast defenses of the United States were seriously expanded and upgraded with new technology.[1] Today, the Fort Banks Mortar Battery is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Town of Winthrop is a municipality in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States.

Humble Jobs But Perilous
Date: Sunday, October 17, 1909
Paper: Trenton Evening Times (Trenton, NJ)
Page: 5
Risking their lives to save others is the daily occupation of two men, who do it for a living, says the Boston Post. They are JUNA POPE and ANGUS MATHEWSON, who are stationed at the entrance of the terminal at Sullivan Square, Boston, and their duties consist in guarding the lives of the more than 115,000 people aboard the trains that pass through the entrance every day.

Not a train car can enter the station until these men have given the signal, a green flag by day, a green latern by night, and to give that signal they must cross the deadly third rail, with any false step spelling instant death.

"Why,' says Pope, "I honestly never give a thought to the danger. At first, of course, I was careful, but now I have become so used to it, and know so well what it would mean to me to step on it, that I forget all about it half the time. I don't mean to say that I am careless, but simply it has become sucha part of my work not to do it that I don't believe that I could step on it if I wanted to.

"Of course, I knew all about the danger of fooling with the third rail long before I took the job, but I remember exactly what Superintendent Presho and Trainmaster Benjamin told me when I took the job. ' The third rail is there, Pope, and it is a darn good thing to keep away from, and up to now I've done it."

Pope's first name is Juna, and he enjoys the distinction of being the only person in the world bearing this unusual name. He was christened JUNAH, a common name in the South, but when he entered the army the "h" was left out by a clerical error, and this is his legal name at present.

"I never give it a thought," declares Mathewson. "I know it's there, of course, and I'm not chump enough to step on it."

Of the two Pope has held down this job longer. He was put on a year ago last October, and has been serving continously since then. in that time he has stepped across the ugly chasm more than 10,000 times. Yet he laughs when the word danger is mentioned. And at the very instant he laughs he deftly skips across to let in a train.

Pope was born in South Carolina. His father was a soldier during the Civil War. In 1895 Pope started for the Klondike to make his fortune, but when he reached Oregon he changed his mind and enlisted in Battery M Third Artillery.

He re-enlisted again and again, until in 1906 while at Fort Banks, Winthrop, he married, purchased his discharge and immediately entered the employ of the elevated road, settling in a comfortable home at 158 Broadway, Everett, with his wife and two-year-old daughter.

Mathewson is also married and lives with his wife and little boy at 263 Main Street, Charlestown.

He was born in Scotland thirty-one years ago, and has been in this country only four years, two of which have been spent in the employ of the elevated road.
