Cyrus H Bemis was born in Surry, the son of Cyrus and Emma (Wilcox) Bemis.

He was a laborer at a chair shop in Keene and then later in Nelson.

On 27 May 1852, he first married Mary Jane Webster of Gilsum, they later divorced, Mary claimed adultery.

On 30 May 1877, he married Elvira E. Chamberlain of Dublin, the daughter of James and Anna (Marshall) Chamberlain. She died less than a year later.

He then married Sarah Adeline Moody on 3 Mar 1880, daughter of Moses and Betsey W (Howe) Moody. She was previously married to Darius Alanson Wood. This was his third marriage. Two years later Addie divorced Cyrus claiming habitual drunkenness.

Cyrus married a fourth time to Angenette Tarbox on 29 Nov 1888, daughter of Mark and Susan (Abbott) Tarbox, she was also previously married to William Atkins of Vermont.

At the age 63, in a civil ceremony performed in Nelson by Frank Jewett, Justice of the Peace on 29 November 1888, Cyrus married Angenette Tarbox, daughter of Mark and Susan Tarbox of Nelson. This marriage was his fourth.
