Son of Jehiel and Eliza (Griffin) Chapman.

On 23 Dec 1854 William Seymour Chapman married Mary Ann Upton, daughter of Paul and Sally (Nichols) Upton, at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both.
They had at least three children.

On 17 Oct 1861 William, a farmer, mustered into service with Co. I, of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Russell, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He was 29 years old.

William and Orsemus G. Chapman, brothers, and brothers-in-law of Calvin P. Dustin, all served together in Co I of the 15th Massachusetts.

William died on 17 Sep 1862 at The Battle of Antietam, Washington County, Maryland. He was 30 years old.
