Early Career Woman Dies: PERU-Mrs. Mary Howes Reeder, 98, Rt. 3, Peru, an author, musician, former teacher, and active in politics shortly after women achieved the right to vote, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday in Dukes Hospital, after several years illness. Born near Goodland Oct. 14, 1871, she was the daughter of Isaac and Mary Jane Armfield. Her first marriage in 1905 was to Will P. Howes who died in 1937. Her second marriage on Nov. 21, 1954, was to Dr. Charles Reeder who died Dec 30, 1962. Survivors are a foster daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Darstein, Fort Wayne, and a nephew. A graduate of Central Normal College at Danville, she was a teacher in Benton County and Denver. She was Peru School attendance officer from 1927 until 1933, and taught piano for several years. More than 600 poems and one book which she wrote were published. She was a soloist with the famous three-Fourth Century Chorus whose membership included several Metropolitan singers. In 1925 and 1926 she was vice chairwoman of Miami County Republican Central Committee. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Sunday at McCain Funeral Home. Rites will be there at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Al Kundenreich officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery at Denver.
