N. H. Wheless Dies at 81; Rites Today
N. Hobson Wheless, 81, died Monday in Schumpert Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Wheless, a native of Shreveport, was chairman of Commercial National Bank and Wheless Drilling Company.
He was a graduate of Sewanee Military Academy and attended the University of the South. He was a veteran of World War I.
In 1923 he founded the drilling company now known as Wheless Drilling Company. In 1926 he became a director of the Commercial National Bank, becoming chairman in 1956.
He was managing partner of the N. H. Wheless Oil Company, president and director of Tensas Delta Land Company, director of the Louisiana State Fair Association, director of the Public Solicitation Review Council, founder and chairman of the Wheless Foundation and trustee of the William C. Woolf Foundation.
Mr. Wheless was the second president of the American Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors and during World War II served as a member of the Petroleum Administration for War.
He was a member of St. Mark's Church, where he served as junior warden from 1934 to 1941, and as senior warden from 1941 to 1960. He had also served as a trustee for the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana.
He was one of the nine founders of the Shreveport Club and served as its second president.
In 1953 he established at Sewanee Military Academy the N. Hobson Wheless Award, which is one of the Academy's most coveted awards.
Mr. Wheless served in 1957 as Chairman of the Sponsors Committee of the United Fund of Caddo and Bossier Parishes and in 1959 received the United Fund Medallion.
He was an avid sportsman and served as a member of the Louisiana Board of Conservation under Governor Sam Jones. He was a member of the Shreveport Country Club and the Petroleum Club of Shreveport.
Survivors include one son, Nicholas H. Wheless, Jr. of Shreveport; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Tracey Elise and Mary Emily Hogan.
The Rev. Richard J. Burns, Jr., acting rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, will conduct services at St. Mark's at 3 p.m. today. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery under the direction of Osborn Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Wheless, Burrows J. Wheless, Hewitt T. Wheless, Richard C. Eglin, Barney Gibbs, Emmett R. Hook, Claude G. Rives III, Dr. James H. Eddy, Jr.
The family has requested that those wishing to send memorials direct them to St. Mark's Episcopal Church or to St. Mark's Day School.
