Pete Kittilsby Schoening
Birth: Jul. 30, 1927
Death: Sep. 22, 2004

Mountaineer. A chemical engineer and successful businessman born in Seattle, Washington, he is most famous for his heroism a half century ago on the world's second-highest peak, K2 in the Himalayas. There at 24,500 feet up 28,250-foot mountain on Aug. 10, 1953, with a rope belayed around his hip, Schoening held onto a wooden ice ax jammed behind a rock to miracuously stop the slide of the five fellow climbers and somehow held onto a disabled climber at the same time. Later led a 1958 expedition to be the first team to ascend the 26,470-foot Gasherbrum I, a neighbor of K2. Particpated in the 1966 expedition that made four first ascents in the Mount Vinson Massif, the highest summit in Antarctica at 16,067 feet. At 68, he climbed 22,800-foot Aconcagua, highest peak in the Andes, and then Kilimanjaro, at 19,335 feet, the highest peak in Africa. He scaled five of the world's seven highest peaks during his lifetime. Died of cancer at his home in Kenmore, Washington. (bio by: Fred Beisser)
