John was born as Jan van den Hoek (= of the Corner) on 9 January 1877 in the Netherlands, province Zuid-Holland, nowadays municipality Graafstroom, town Goudriaan.
In 1893 he emigrated with his parents and siblings to the USA. His mother died three days after arrival in the Dutch agrarian settlement Harrison, Douglas County, southeast South Dakota.
