Horace "Shad" Enea, lifelong resident and former fire chief for the City of Pittsburg, died November 29, 2005 at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Enea; two sons, Richard and wife, Dianna, and Sam and wife, Debra; and a daughter, Sara Aitken and husband, Doug. In addition, he leaves behind six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, grandchildren, Richard Anthony Enea, Michael, Matthew and Josh Enea, and Brian and Julie Young; great-grandchildren, Aerial and Tylor. Born to Rocco and Sara Enea September 15, 1918, he was the eighth child in a family of nine. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Francis Russo, Jenny Grillo and Mamie Papa; and three brothers, Settimo "Susky" Enea, Joe and John Enea. He has two surviving siblings, brother, Frank Enea; and sister, Rose Ventrice. He was close to many nieces and nephews with whom he grew up. In the early years he worked for his uncles who owned the movie theaters in Pittsburg. Frequently leaving the theater as a volunteer is where his interest in fire fighting grew. In 1943 he was hired by the department, where he later became a captain, and subsequently, chief. He later served as Pittsburg's fire chief from 1960 until 1975. He was interested in politics, sports, and just having coffee with the guys. He was also a member of the Pittsburg Lions Club and the California Fire Chief's Association. He was a Riverview Fire District Commissioner. He was a longtime St. Peter Martyr Church member and usher. Visitation begins Thursday, December 1, 2005, 2:00pm with a rosary at 7:00pm at the Pittsburg Funeral Chapel. Mass Friday, December 2, 2005, 10:00am at the Church of the Good Shepherd.
