A law graduate of the University of New York, he was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1870. After setting up a practice in his native Paterson, New Jersey, he served five years as the city's criminal magistrate recorder (1890 to 1895) before being elected as a Republican to represent New Jersey's 5th District in the United States House of Representatives, He served three terms (1895 to 1903) before being defeated in 1902 by Congressman Charles Newell Fowler for the seat. He returned to his Paterson law practice, and passed away less then a year after leaving Congress. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
