Nestor served in the US Navy from 25 May 1944 to 23 Dec 1945. On 1 Aug 1944, he sailed from San Diego, California on the USS Ocelot (IX-110). On 23 Sep 1944, he began serving as a Seaman 2nd Class aboard the heavy cruiser USS New Orleans. On 31 Mar 1945, Nestor mustered as a Seaman 1st Class. On 1 January 1946, Nestor mustered as a Fireman 1st Class.

In Sep 1944, after the USS New Orleans re-provisioned at Manus, it was part of the task force that assaulted Okinawa, Formosa, and Northern Luzon; destroying Japanese land-based aviation which otherwise would have threatened the landings on Leyte on 20 October. In 1945, after replenishing at Ulithi, New Orleans guarded carriers during raids throughout the Philippines in preparation for the invasion of Mindoro. In late December, she sailed for a Mare Island Navy Yard overhaul, followed by training in Hawaii. She returned to Ulithi on 18 April 1945, and two days later, departed to give direct gunfire support at Okinawa, arriving on 23 April. Here, she engaged with shore batteries and fired directly against the enemy lines. After nearly two months on station, she sailed to replenish and repair in the Philippines and was at Subic Bay when hostilities ceased.

Nestor was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 stars, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 stars, the World War II Victory Medal, and the American Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged at San Pedro, California.
