Cpl. Richard A. Rivera Jr., 20 of Ventura, Calif., died Aug. 10 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Richie was born July 26, 1992 in Ventura. He attended Oxnard schools and graduated from Rio Mesa High School in 2010. He went on to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. His parent command was 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. While supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan, he was awarded numerous medals.
Some of his passions in life included excelling on and off the football field, being a role model to younger brother Isaiah, and spending time with family and friends, creating a lifetime of memories. Richie was known to have a heart of gold and a smile that would light up a room. Many were drawn to his fun loving personality and positive outlook on life.
Richie is survived by his devoted mother, brother, high school sweetheart, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and countless cousins and amazing friends.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 pm, Monday, August 27, with the Vigil service starting at 6:30 pm, at Santa Clara Mortuary, 2370 North H Street, Oxnard.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Tuesday, August 28, at Santa Clara Church, 323 S. "E" St., Oxnard, followed by military honors at Santa Clara Mortuary. Obituary information provided by Santa Clara Mortuary. Names of living relatives omitted per Find a Grave guidelines.
