Harry Goldberg, 83, well known Gladwin businessman, civic leader and philanthropist, died Sunday, Aug. 20, in the Gladwin Area Hospital, after along illness. Born in Gladwin on October 8, 1894, he spent his lifetime here and attended Gladwin schools and Detroit Business College. Mr. Goldberg owned and operated Goldberg's Department Store, which was founded by his father, Samuel, in 1886, from 1925 until recent years when he took a less active part in its operation. He was married to the former Rebecca Karol on March 16, 1915, in Saginaw.
Vitally interested in the community of Gladwin and its progress, Mr. Goldberg served as chairman of the fund raising committee for the new Gladwin Area Hospital. He served on the board of directors of the Mid Michigan Bank for many years, was a former Gladwin City councilman and active in the Gladwin Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Goldberg was past president of the Gladwin Rotary Club, past master of the Gladwin Masonic Lodge No. 397, a member of the Gladwin I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 177, the Consistory, the Shriners, Temple Benjamin in Mt. Pleasant and a life member of B'Nai B'rith. During World War II he was a war bond salesman.
In 1969, Mr. Goldberg was named Gladwin County Man of The Year by the Chamber of Commerce. In 1972, he and his wife donated the Goldberg Child Care Center at Mid Michigan Community College.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Carvel (Mildred) Wolfson of Gladwin; 3 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home with Dr. Jossef Kratzenstein officiating. Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. at Clover Hill Cemetery in Royal Oak. Gladwin County Record dated 8-23/1978 Column - 2 Page - 1.
