Professional Boxer. He was the former WBA Heavyweight Champion from 1982 to 1983. Muhammad Ali served as Dokes childhood inspiration and before the age of fourteen, he held such jobs as lunch deliverer, brick hauler and busboy. By the age of fifteen, he turned to boxing and made an immediate impression on the sport as he captured the United States Amateur Heavyweight Championship in 1975, in addition to winning a silver medal at the Pan American Games. One year later, he turned professional and climbed up the rankings as he tallied 25 victories. He earned a title match against Mike Weaver in Las Vegas on December 10th, 1982 and scored a 63 second technical knockout over the champion clinching the WBA Heavyweight title. This knockout remains as one of the quickest recorded in the history of the Heavyweight Division. He secured a successful title defense in a rematch against Weaver five months later and on September 23rd, 1983, in what Dokes described as his "most painful moment", he was knocked out in the 10th round by the South African challenger Gerrie Coetzee. He went onto capture the WBA Inter-Continental Heavyweight Title and the WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Title, earning Ring Magazine Comeback of the Year in 1988. He suffered a 10-round technical knockout defeat to Evander Holyfield on March 11th, 1989. Following the bout, Holyfield described Dokes as having the "swiftest fists" he ever faced. He experienced his final chance at a title, when he fought for the WBA and IBF World Heavyweight crowns which resulted with a 1st round technical knockout to Riddick Bowe on March 6th, 1993. He retired from boxing in 1997, after compiling a 53 win (34 knockout), 6 loss and 2 drawn record. His post-boxing life was nothing short of a nightmare as he battled drug and alcohol addiction. He was sent to prison for assaulting his fiancee in 1998 and was released in 2008. In his last months, he battled liver cancer which he succumbed to. (bio by: C.S.)
