Esther Julier Dovel was the daughter of Edward Julier, a Canadian-born blacksmith and machinist, and his wife Mary. The family first lived in Muskingum Co., OH, and by 1860 moved to Washington Co. On June 3, 1872 Esther married Richard Isaac Dovel (1844-1920), son of Isaac Columbus Dovel, a banker in Ironton, Lawrence Co., OH. The couple had seven children: Arthur LeRoy (b. 1872), Bernard (b. 1875), Bertha Lena (b. 1879), Isaac C. (b. & d. 1882), Carrie Belle (b. 1887), Verda F. (b. 1892), and Hobart McKinley (b. 1894).

Mrs. Esther J. Dovel, aged 65, wife of Isaac Richard Dovel, died at her home in Ironton, Sunday, after a long illness. She is survived by her husband and the following children:
Bernard, married and residing in Pittsburg, Pa.; Bertha and Verda, teachers in Pittsburg schools; Mrs. Essie Hunter, of Charleston, and Hobart, of Ironton.
Mrs. Worthington, of Portsmouth, and Mrs. Cherrington, of South Dakota, are the surviving sisters.
Neither were able to attend the services, which were held this afternoon.
