Birth: Jan. 25, 1925
Death: Jul. 5, 2012

Verdell C. Martin, 87, entered into the glorious presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Thursday, July 5, 2012, at her home. Born in Rankin, Miss., she was the daughter of the late James O. and Zee Chapman. She was preceded in death by her parents and her only brother, the Rev. James T. Chapman. A devoted homemaker, Verdell Martin exemplified many of the qualities of the Proverbs 31 woman, as she always "looked well to the ways of her household;" "strength and honor were her clothing;" and she quietly reached out "to the poor and needy." Serving her Lord, family, church and others brought her the greatest joy. Truly, "her children rise up and call her blessed..." Professionally, she enjoyed an interesting career with ManTech International, which afforded her numerous trips abroad to Europe, Africa and South America. She leaves behind to cherish her loving memory her two children, daughter, Sandy Dunbar and husband, Cuyler, of Conover, and son, Bill Martin and wife, Alice, of Pelham, Ala.; grandchildren, Kelli and Wayne Smith, of Kingston, Tenn., Tamara and Philip Shipley, of South Haven, Miss., Dr. Cathlena Martin and husband, Stephen Bennett, of Birmingham, Ala., and Kyle and Meredith Dunbar, of Nashville, Tenn.; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Jeffrey Smith, of Kingston, Tenn. Special friends include Marie Braswell, Sara Crowe, Judy Dellinger, Dr. Billy Price and the Hospice staff. Memorials may be sent to Tri-City Baptist Church, P.O. Box 40, Conover, NC 28613, or to Safe Harbor, 210 2nd St. SE, Hickory, NC 28602. Private burial will be at Catawba Memorial Gardens with a public celebration of life at Tri-City Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 7, with receiving of friends to follow. Condolences may be sent to the Martin family at drumfuneralhome. com. The Martin family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 940 29th Ave. NE, Hickory, NC, (828) 267-5740.
