DANIEL KELLY

Daniel Kelly, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Kelly, was born at Arrowsmith, Ill., on May 1, 1883.

On Thanksgiving Day, 1884, he came with his parents, brother and sisters, to Nebraska, where his parents had previously bought a farm two miles west of Ulysses.

His father passed away in 1912 and soon afterwards his brother and two of his sisters were married, leaving Dan to operate the farm and care for his mother and two remaining sisters. A few years ago his mother passed away, leaving Dan, Nellie and Katie alone on the farm.

Dan was a quiet, conscientious, home-loving man, a good worker, a devout Catholic and a member of the Holy Name Society.

On Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 9, he went to work as usual but when he did not return in the evening, his sisters phoned the neighbors and together they made a search for him. Louis Smith found him in the field, lying peacefully on the ground as if he had fallen asleep, with the horses nearby standing still. Evidently he had died of a heart attack. It was a severe shock for those near and dear to him, as they had learned to depend on him as the mainstay of the family. He leaves his brother, Hugh, of Columbus, four sisters, Mrs. Mary Gould, Mrs. Isabel Gannon, Nellie and Katie, all of Ulysses, and numerous nieces and nephews, and other relatives.

Very impressive funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Downey at the Ulysses Catholic Church on Saturday morning, Oct. 12, and a long line of sorrowing relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place, the Catholic cemetery. The pallbearers were George and Leonard Gannon, James Kelly, Lester Jones, Robert McGowen and Leo Timoney. Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. James Mahoney of Lincoln; Mrs. Catherine Beecham and daughter Ella of Bennet, Nebr.; Hubert Beecham, William Beecham and son; John Maloney and John Powers of Palmyra; Dan and John Powers and Mrs. B. Considine of David City; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Moore and daughter Ellen of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lambe of Osceola; James Kelly of Omaha; George Gannon of Scottsbluff; Mrs. Wm. Rasche of Lincoln; James McGowen, of Schuyler; Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Kelly and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Lester Jones and baby, of Columbus.
