Daughter of Francis Eugene & Mary Rose Coleman Shannon, wife of Floyd A Hepworth

Mary Catherine Hepworth, 83, of South Jacksonville, died peacefully at her home Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, surrounded by her family.

She was born May 8, 1929, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Francis Eugene Shannon and Mary Rose Coleman Shannon (Carson). She married Floyd A. "Coke" Hepworth on Aug. 1, 1947, in Jacksonville, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 2004.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Jane (husband, Larry) Foster of Jacksonville and Ann (husband, Allan) Ditzig of Flower Mound, Texas; two sons, Jim (wife, Georgia) Hepworth of Springfield and Bill (wife, Chris) Hepworth of Elburn; 10 grandchildren, Katie (husband, Dale) Spoon of Springfield, Shannon, Lauren and Josh Hepworth of Elburn, Jacob (wife, Sierra) Foster, Alissa Foster and Michael Foster, all of Jacksonville, and Alec, Jason and Rachel Ditzig, all of Flower Mound, Texas; five great-grandchildren, one stepsister, Cicily (husband, Sheldon Lee) Carson of Chicago; and two stepbrothers, Fred (wife, Pat) Carson of Maryland and John H. (wife, Marilyn) Carson Jr. of Florida. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda C. Hepworth; one infant son, John David; one granddaughter, Kim Hepworth; two brothers, Francis Eugene Shannon Jr. and James Robert Shannon; and one half brother, James Eugene Shannon.

Mary was a cook for many years at Routt and Our Saviour schools. She was a longtime member of the Church of Our Saviour, where she served as assistant sacristan, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Altar and Rosary Society. Mary loved to bake, and was known for her angel food cake, among other things. She enjoyed the theatre and having lunch with her friends in the "Lunch Bunch." Mary was a caregiver to many, and a kind and loving mother and grandmother.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call after 12 Noon Friday at the Williamson Funeral Home, where the family will meet friends following a 3:45 p.m. prayer service, until 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Church of Our Saviour or Rout Catholic High School/Our Saviour School.
