August 17, 1923

Obituary: Mr. John Evans, Smithy, Penrhyncoch, after ailing for months, passed away on Thursday at sixty eight years of age. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon when internment was made at Salem Churchyard. The large concourse revealed his popularity being on of the largest ever seen at Salem. Deceased came to Salem about 30 years ago and his business connection included a wide area. He possessed a quiet disposition and invaluable qualities which enabled him to make friends and keep them. The Pastor (The Rev. Ll Morgan) who officiated described him as a man of sterling character. He had been a member of the Church for 38 years and a deacon for many years as well as a superintendent of the Sunday School popular with the scholars; the following also officiated at house and graveside: The Vicar The Rev R. Williams, Penrhyncoch, The Rev J. Llewelyn, Borth; The Rev E.O. Williams of Penrhyncoch; and Mr. John Hughes, Tan-y-Bryn, Salem. The Rev John Davies, Bow Street, The Rev Humphries, Borth; and The Rev Thomas, Penrhyncoch, were also present. Mrs B. Jones, Broginin presided at the organ.
