He was wounded and became a POW at the battle of 1st Bull Run in 1861. After his release, he was discharged and re-enlisted once again. The 2nd Wisconsin roster states that he died in 1862 in Madison, Wisconsin which is incorrect.

OBITUARY: Appeared in Lake Crystal newspaper on October 13, 1897.
Attorney Reed of this place received a telegram Tuesday morning announcing the death of D. F. Crane, at his home in Lamoni, Iowa, that morning. At one time Mr. Crane was a resident of this place. He was postmaster for a number of years and was an old soldier. Mr. Crane was an honorable, upright citizen and had the respect of his fellow townsmen.
He leaves a wife, child and several relatives.
