On 22 Mar 1864 Charles mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry having received a bounty of $325, and being credited to the quota of Boston. He was 18 years old. On 27 Jul 1864 he was transferred to the 20th Massachusetts Infantry.
On 14 Sep 1870 Charles married Lucia Antoinette F. "Lucy" Fairfield, 20, daughter of Turner Crocker and Lucy W. (Frost) Fairfield , at Boston in a first marriage for both. She died at Hancock County, Maine, being accidently drowned off of Swans Island.
On 9 Sep 1879 Charles married Martha Hazeltine, 19, daughter of Richard Flagler and Hannah Jane (Shearman) Hazeltine, at Mt. Hope, near Lander, Farmington Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania.
