Sims Edgerton served as a private in the War of 1812. His name is found on the muster rolls of the 14th New York Militia Regiment and the 157th New York Militia Regiment. On September 10, 1844, Sims was granted a patent of eighty acres of land in Walworth County, Wisconsin from the Federal Government. In the same year, "Lewis Edgerton" of Spring Prairie, Wisconsin was granted a claim of $28.00 based upon his service in the War of 1812 (see Index of Awards on Claims of the Soldiers of the War of 1812; New York Adjutant General's Office; Albany, New York: Clearfield Co.; 1860; pg. 159).
Sims married three times, some genealogists report he married five times.
Married Polly Holbert on February 22, 1821; Rome, Oneida Co., NY. She died October 18, 1824; Rome, Oneida Co., NY.
Second marriage to Harriet Benedict on January 20, 1832; Rome, Oneida Co., NY. She died December 23, 1837; Verona, Oneida Co., NY.
Third marriage to Maria E. Taber on September 24, 1844; Rome, Oneida Co., NY.
