A graveside service for former Portland resident Royal W. Cooke of San Leandro, Calif., will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
Mr. Cooke died of causes related to age Friday in Hayward, Calif. He was 94.
He was born March 28, 1899, in Portland. He graduated from the Oregon State School for the Deaf and married Selma Hagen in 1924. During the late 1940s, he was a founding member of the United Evangelical Church of the Deaf in Portland. The church became the largest independent interdenominational church for the deaf and hearing impaired in the United States.
Mr. Cooke worked as a senior furniture restoration and refinishing craftsman for the defunct Olds, Wortman & King department store for 35 years. Following his retirement, he lived in Seaside before moving to California. After his wife's death in 1969, he married Helen Patheal in 1978. She died in 1989.
Survivors include his daughter, Anna Marie Smith of Bodega Bay, Calif.; son, Richard W. of New York and Cape Cod, Mass.; brother, Ernest of Sandy; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family suggests remembrances be contributions to local hospice organizations.
