She was the daughter of Martin Hardin (1716-1779) and Lydia (Waters) Hardin (1720 – 1800). Sarah Ellen Hardin married Benjamin Hardin (1738-1866) at Fauquier, Virginia, United States in 1767. Benjamin Hardin was the son of Major John Hardin (1710-1789) and Catherine Marr Hardin (1711-1786).

One of Sarah Hardin's sons, Benjamin Hardin was a United States Representative from Kentucky, member of the Kentucky House of Representatives, was elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth Congress, to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses and served as the Secretary of State of Kentucky 1844–1847.

One of Sarah Hardin's nephews was Martin Davis Hardin (June 26, 1837 – December 12, 1923) was a brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Martin D. Hardin was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, the son of John J. Hardin. He was a family friend and protιgι of Abraham Lincoln (it was at the Hardin family home that Lincoln first met his wife, Mary Todd). Hardin graduated from West Point in the Class of 1859, and was an aide to Robert E. Lee in the hanging of John Brown soon after.
