Raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he was a talented guitarist best known for being a member of the classic southern rock group, ‘The Marshall Tucker Band'. In 1985, Swanlund joined the band's new line-up as a slide and lead guitarist, performing for tours and recordings. He played on some of the bands later hits such as "Fire on the Mountain", "Can't You See", "Searchin' for a Rainbow", "Hangin' Out in Smokey Places" (1987), which was the band's highest-charting song on the country charts and sang "Why Can't You Love" on their album, "Southern Spirit" (1990). He also was part of the band when they played at the Grand Ole Opry, for the first time in its 40-year history in November 2011. When not performing with the Tucker band, he would play and perform with Chicago-area rockers, ‘The Tone Generators' and with fellow Tucker members in ‘The Lightnin' West Band'.
