Amanda was married to 1) William Flynn, 2)Joseph Riley Icenogle and 3) Anderson Smith.

Amanda was born in Monroe County, Indiana to William and Tabitha Followell. The last name could have been spelled Followwell or Fallowell. William was born in Indiana 1823 + or -. Tabitha was born in Indiana 1824 + or -. Amanda was born June 4, 1850 per her obituary.

Amanda is not with the family in the 1860 US Census. A mystery as to why a ten-year-old is not listed.

Amanda married William Flynn March 20, 1867 at age 17 in Monroe County, Indiana. He was born in 1847.

The 1870 US Census has William (age 26), Amanda (age 21), and a daughter, Carolin (age 1).

William Flynn died April 1880 of Pneumonia at age 33 while living in Cottonwood Township, Cumberland County, Illinois.

Amanda and her children, Melissa J age 10; Minnie F age 7; Katherine B "Kittie" age 5; Joseph H age 3; and Eliza A age seven months; all move in with her parents per the 1880 US Census,

Amanda's younger sister Eliza K is married to Joseph Riley Icenogle's third son, James M and they are also living with Eliza's parents, the Followell's, in 1880.

In late 1880 or 1881, Amanda marries Joseph Riley Icenogle who is 20 years older than her. So we have two sisters, Amanda and Eliza, who marry a father and son combo.

Thomas Ward Icenogle is born July 17, 1882 to Amanda and Joseph Riley.

Joseph Riley and Amanda get divorced, the date is uncertain.

There might have been another marriage to John R Mclean on February 26, 1885. The reason I am uncertain about this is because John R Mclean married Mattie Singleton on April 21, 1876. John and Mattie are in the 1910 US Census together. Actually they are in this census twice, one in Decatur, Illinois and one in Mattoon, Illinois. They are buried together in Dodge Grove Cemetery.

So if Amanda married John then it might have happened like this. 1. John marries Mattie 1876. 2. John divorces Mattie. 3. John marries Amanda 1885. 4. John divorces Amanda by 1887. 5. John remarries Mattie and they are still married in 1910. Possible but strange for sure.

She marries Anderson Smith on January 30, 1888. The 1900 US Census has Thomas Ward, at age 17, living with them labeled as a step-son. They have two children, Maud M and Louisa Alice.

Amanda has had six children with Mr. Flynn, one child with Joseph Riley Icenogle, and two children with Mr. Smith for a total of nine.

From the 1910 US Census, Amanda states she had nine children and that seven were still living in 1910.

1. Carolin Flynn, born 1868-69 and likely deceased before 1880 ?
2. Melissa Jane Flynn Gullion, born 1870, not deceased by 1910
3. Minnie Florence Flynn Gaddis, born 1873, not deceased by 1910
4. Katherine B. "Kittie" Flynn, born 1875, not deceased by 1910
5. Joseph H. Flynn, born 1876, not deceased by 1910
6. Eliza A. Flynn, born 1880, date of death is unknown ?
7. Thomas Ward Icenogle, born 1882, not deceased by 1910
8. Maud M. Smith, born 1889, date of death is unknown ?
9. Louisa Alice Smith Banta, born 1892, not deceased by 1910

It really seems that there was not a second child born to Amanda and Joseph Riley Icenogle which contradicts The Johnstown Book. (Freda Landrus Meisenheimer 1976) However, Amanda's obituary does state that she and Joseph had two children, so this mystery remains open as to who the second child is.

The 1920 US Census has Amanda and Anderson Smith living in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. Anderson Smith dies April 13, 1922.

The 1930 US Census has Amanda living in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois with her daughter, Louisa Alice Smith Banta.

Amanda dies May 3, 1939. She was living in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois at the time of her death, living with her daughter, Minnie F. Flynn Gaddis.
