Mrs. Nannie Wells Stanford, 97, went to be with her Lord on May 19, 2010 at Smith Mountain Lake Retirement Village. Mrs Stanford formerly lived at Cherokee Court in Martinsville, VA. She was employed at Belks Department Store in Martinsville. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Martinsville and a member of the Placid Mitchell Sunday School Class.

She is survived by sister Frances Wells Mills of Danville, VA, a granddaughter Lori (Tim) Hairfield of Moneta, VA and
great grandson Landon Hairfield of Moneta.

She is predeceased by husband David Taft Stanford, son David Thomas Stanford, daughter Elizabeth Ann Stanford, brothers Leslie S Wells, William E Wells, Curtis W Wells, S Thomas Wells, Eugene Herman Wells and sisters Annie Maude Jefferson, Hattie Blanche Holland, Algie Lea Parrish and Nora Virginia Turner.

Dr Denis Knight and Reverend John Fulcher conducted the funeral service on May 21, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Martinsville. The arrangements were by Collins-McKee-Store Funeral Home in Martinsville.

Pallbearers were Robert Canupp, John Dyches, W Hugh Haygood, Jimmy Minter, John Pedigo, A L Schilbe, Jr, Kenneth Holland, Clarence Holland, Bill Jefferson, Kermit Parrish, Joe Wells, Gerald Wells, Gene Wells and Robert Wells.

Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville.

The two children of David and Nannie Stanford, David Thomas Stanford and Elizabeth Ann Stanford, were killed in a tragic automobile accident on September 1, 1963. Also killed in the accident were Pamela Moore Stanford, the wife of David Thomas Stanford, and David Leslie Hooker, the driver of the vehicle. The accident was caused by the negilence of the driver of the other vehicle.
