The son of Frederick & Susanna (Goss) Kepperly, in 1850 he lived in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in the 1860 census. He stood 5' 10" tall and had black hair and dark eyes. He was a farmer and later a carpenter by trade.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bloomfield, Perry County, August 25, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 31 as a teamster with Co. I, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
He married Ellen Jane Thompson (Kennedy also reported) and fathered Isaac Thompson (b. 03/??/72) Jane M. (b. 06/19/78 - married Harry K. Stambaugh), Elizabeth E. (b. 02/??/82), and Samuel S. (b. 06/??/84). Cause of death is listed as "mitral regurgiatation."
