The son of John & Rosetta (Liddick) Carl, in 1860 he was living with his mother in Watts Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at Duncan's Island, Dauphin County, August 10, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 16 as a private with Co. C, 136th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863. He also enlisted in Harrisburg September 2, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 7 as a private with Co. I, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
