Boyer was born around 1825 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He married Mildred Lanham in Jan. 1848 in Claiborne County, and they soon moved to Laurel County, Kentucky with her family. Boyer and Mildred had four children: William A. Bullard, Malinda, Sarah E., and James Lee. Around 1859, after Mildred's apparent death, Boyer left Kentucky and headed to Missouri. The children, however, remained in Laurel County with Mildred's family.
Boyer married Elender "Ella" Casey on Nov. 15, 1860 in Wright County, Missouri. When the Civil War broke out, Boyer joined the Union Army. He had also served during the Mexican War. After the Civil War, Boyer and Ella lived in Webster and Newton counties, and had a family of eight children. Only three of these children are known to have married and have families of their own.
According to Boyer's Civil War pension file, he died in Newton County, Missouri on Nov. 30, 1882. The location of his burial is not known.
