Esther Kirn, 94, of Chelsea died Saturday, July 17, , at the Chelsea United Methodist Retirement Home, where she had lived since 1974.
She was born Oct. 19, 1898, in Gravesville, Wis., the daughter of John George and Ursula (Accola) Weihing.
She married Rev. Stanley P. Kirn June 22, 1922, in Naperville, Ill. The following Septemer they sailed to China, where they served as Evangelical missionaries for 4 years. They returned to the states in 1926, and served several pastorates in Michigan. They ministered at Salem Church in Cass City from 1940 to 1950. When Rev. Kirn retired in 1963, they returned to Cass City to live. He died Dec. 22, 1969.
Mrs. Kirn taught in the Cass City schools, worked at Rawson Memorial Library, was active in the Cass City AAUW, and worked in many community activities.
She served over 30 years on the Evangelical Conference board, and served as state president of the Women's Society of World Service. She was a popular speaker for the Board of Missions, and was a devoted worker with children at the pastorates they served.
At the Retirement Home, she served on the Resident's Council and was in charge of the historical room. In 1992 this room was named the Esther Kirn Heritage Room.
She is survived by 2 sons, Stanley and Betty Kirn of Cass City, and John and Alice Kirn of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; one daughter, Marjorie Kirn of Flint; 5 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, one great-grandson and 3 sisters.
Funeral services were scheduled Tuesday, July 20, at the Retirement Home Chapel with the Rev. Ben Bohnsack of Brighton United Methodist Church and the Rev. Gordon Schleicher, chaplain, officiating. Burial was to be in Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery at Flat Rock.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 25, at 2:30 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Ray, the Rev. Ira Wood and the Rev. Clare Patton officiating.
Memorials may be made to Chelsea United Methodist Retirement Home, Salem Uited Methodist Church, or Rawson Memorial Library.
Arrangements were made by the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.
