Ira was the 4th of 6 children born to Henry Clay and Mary Ellen Murdock Compton. He was born on what is now Llano Seco Ranch, described when he was born as Grizzley Bend. He attended Pierce Christian College in College City & Healds Business College. He was a businessman in S. F. for a while & later owned a 1900 acre plus ranch below Princeton in Colusa Co. He sold the ranch in 1920 & retired to Berkeley.
He married Eva May Riker on May 28, 1901 in Oroville, CA.
