Son of Bradford and Lucretia H. Marcy.
On 12 Jul 1861 John, a shoemaker, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Charlton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 17 years and 4 months old.
On 17 Sep 1862 John was wounded at The Battle of Antietam, Washington County, Maryland.
On 18 May 1864 in the "Worcester Spy," Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, he was noted among the wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness.
On 28 Jul 1864 John ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts having fulfilled his term of service.
After the war, John married a wife, Sarah Elizabeth. They had four children.
AFter 1870, the family moved to Pennsylvania, finally living in Philadelphia County.
