Erwin Piscator
Birth: Dec. 17, 1893
Death: Mar. 30, 1966

German modernist theatre director. In his point of view, theatre has an agitational and propagandistic function. After returning from the front line in the 1st World War, he became a member of the Berlin Dada movement. In 1918 he joined the newly-founded German Communist Party. He worked as a theatre director at first at Volksbühne, then founded own companies. In the 1930s he made films in the Soviet Union. In 1936 he moved to Paris, then to the United States, where in New York he taught Dramatic Workshop. He was the teacher of artists such as Marlon Brando or James Dean. After the 2nd World War he returned to Germany to direct Freie Volksbühne. He died in Starnberg in 1966.  (bio by: Apats)
